City officials, SEOPW CRA and Overtown community members came together in Historic Overtown to show their support.
MIAMI, FL – Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado, District Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones and SEOPW CRA Executive Director Clarence Woods joined board members of the Overtown Rhythm and Arts Festival to announce this year’s festival performers and unveil the official artist poster at a press conference held June 1, 2012.
The 2nd Annual Overtown Rhythm and Arts Festival will feature award-winning headlining artists American soul singer Freddie Jackson and singer and guitarist Jonathan Butler, as well as contemporary Jazz singer Nicole Henry, the Larry Dogg Band, Earnest Walker Jr. and Company, Dei 7 Free Range Music and the Booker T. Washington Marching Band – all to perform on the main stage. The second stage will feature DJ Big Will, Niche Monet and other local acts.
“We are excited about the second annual Overtown Rhythm and Arts Festival taking place in Historic Overtown,” said Miami Commissioner Spence-Jones. “Last year, the festival brought visitors from other areas and counties, many who had never been to Overtown. We are excited that it continues to grow in its second year and that its organizers continue to believe in Overtown.”
The 2nd Annual Overtown Rhythm and Arts Festival will take place on Saturday, June 23 in Historic Overtown on 3rd Avenue from 9th to 11th Streets, from 11:00AM to 8:00PM. Admission is free.
Along with great music, festivalgoers will enjoy local food, art vendors showcasing their work and a kids village that will have interactive activities, including face painting and balloon creations and sport games.
This year’s festival poster was also unveiled at the press conference. It represents an artistic collaboration of brothers Donald and Robert McKnight, who painted two children playing the saxophone in front of a church in Historic Overtown. The original painting will be exhibited in the Ward Rooming House, 249 NW 9th Street.
