2nd Annual Miss Overtown USA and Teen Miss Overtown USA Pageant to be held March 24, 2012 at Booker T. Washington Senior High School

Miami, FL February 7, 2012 –Young women in Overtown will once again have the opportunity to compete for the title of Miss USA by participating in the 2nd Annual Miss Overtown USA and Teen Miss Overtown USA pageant, brought to the community by the Overtown Rhythm and Arts Festival and the Community Redevelopment Agency of Miami  (“Miami CRA”).

The registration will open February 6, 2012 and close on March 1, 2012. Registration materials can be picked up at Moselle’s Boutique, located at 1033 N.W. 3rd Avenue.  Registrants will participate in a full-day boot-camp to prepare them for the pageant.  The boot-camp will take place on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at Williams Park Community Center, located at 1717 N.W. 5th Avenue.

Teen Miss Overtown USA candidates must be 14-17 years old, reside in Overtown, currently be enrolled in school, a US citizen, unmarried, and have no children. Miss Overtown USA candidates must be 18-27 years old, reside in Overtown, a US Citizen, unmarried, and have no children.

On Saturday, March 24th pageant contestants will compete to win a college scholarship, a modeling portfolio from professional photographer Baron Da’ Parre, an evening gown from La Casa Hermosa, and many other prizes. 

Miss Overtown USA and Teen Miss Overtown USA are the preliminary pageants to Miss USA and a part of the Overtown Rhythm & Arts Festival, which aims to celebrate the rich history of one of Miami’s earliest settlements, Overtown. The winners of the Miss Overtown USA and Teen Miss Overtown USA pageants will have the opportunity to commemorate the festival on Saturday, June 23, 2012.

New Date for Second Annual Overtown Rhythm & Arts Festival Allows for Bigger, Better Event

MIAMI, FL – February 3, 2012The Overtown Rhythm & Arts Festival, a one-day festival celebrating the rich history of one of Miami’s earliest settlements, will now be held on Saturday, June 23, 2012, promising to be a resounding success with even more vendors and top-notch entertainment.

“We believe that showcasing this great community through the Overtown Rhythm & Arts Festival gives businesses and artists a unique opportunity to reach out to new customers and participate in the revitalization of their neighborhood,” said Sarah Ingle, a board member of the Overtown Rhythm & Arts Festival.

The Overtown Rhythm and Arts Festival Board has been working closely with the office of City of Miami Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones to ensure that the members of the community are engaged in the festival, ensuring a greater economic development impact.

The new date for the festival will allow for wider promotion of the event, highlighting the cultural, artistic and economic richness of Overtown well beyond its borders.

Set on the Historic Overtown District’s vibrant main street of NW 3rd Avenue, between 9th and 11th Streets, this year’s event will feature local and national musical artists, as well as local church choirs and the Booker T. Washington High School Marching Band. Festival goers will get a chance to enjoy delicious soul food, including authentic BBQ, southern cooking and typical Caribbean dishes. Local artists will also be exhibiting their unique art pieces, providing a heightened sense of culture to the festival. Admission to the festival is free.

The media sponsors for the 2012 festival include WTVJ-NBC6 and WDNA 88.9FM.

Thousands of people enjoyed the free street festival last year, discovering all that Overtown has to offer, from great music to delicious food and exceptional artwork. This year, the Overtown Rhythm & Arts Festival will be an even bigger hit with more space for vendors and an overall cultural and economic enhancement within the community.
