MIAMI, FL – April 12, 2012 – With a 4 – 0 vote during the March 29, 2012 meeting, the board of commissioners of the Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency authorized a grant, in an amount not to exceed $50,000, to the Overtown Rhythm & Arts Festival, inc., allowing the Festival to bring a more significant economic development impact to the area of Overtown.
“It is inspiring to work with a group such as the Overtown Rhythm and Arts Festival Board, which works on an entirely volunteer basis, with the purpose of bringing culture and arts to the streets of Overtown, as well as stimulate ecoomic development and culture to Overtown,” said CRA Chairwoman, Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones.
Set on the Historic Overtown District’s vibrant main street of NW 3rd Avenue on Saturday, June 23, 2012, between 9th and 11th Streets, this FREE event will feature local and national musical artists, as well as local church choirs and the Booker T. Washington High School Marching Band. Festival goers will get a chance to enjoy delicious soul food, including authentic BBQ, southern cooking and typical Caribbean dishes. Local artists will also be exhibiting their unique art pieces, providing a heightened sense of culture to the festival.
The Overtown Rhythm and Arts Festival Board has been working closely with the office of City of Miami Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones to ensure that the members of the community are engaged in the festival, ensuring a greater economic development impact.
The media sponsors for the 2012 festival include WTVJ-NBC6 and WDNA 88.9FM.
